Our Programs

At KX FM, our programs are designed to inform, inspire, and connect the communities we serve. Through youth mentorship, emergency broadcasting, local programming, and community events, we create opportunities for engagement both on and off the air.

Youth Mentorship

KXFM provides opportunities for local students to learn the fundamentals of broadcasting while developing their own voices and perspectives on issues that matter to them. Through internships and youth-led shows, students gain practical media experience and use the station as a platform to share stories, ideas, and initiatives with the community.

KXFM’s Highschool Internship Program

KXFM’s High School Internship Program trains the next generation of storytellers

Our interns learn interviewing, editing, and production skills while gaining real on-air broadcast experience supported by KX staff and volunteers.

Intern Testimonials

Justin: KXFM provides a great and memorable way to get hands-on experience in radio and journalism. You won’t regret it!

Cahlel: Amazing experience! Great learning opportunity for anyone who’s interested in journalism and audio production. Helpful and considerate advisors that push you where you need to go.

Jude Lifeset: KXFM has given me the opportunity to use my voice within my community. This experience has allowed me to grow not only as a journalist but as a broadcaster and reporter to listeners. The advisors, hands-on experience, and mentoring create a powerful learning experience.

Teen Action Radio

Teen Action radio show centers around a student-led organization, Walking for Water, that partners with Wisdom Spring to build wells and educate youth in multiple areas of Africa and India. Students discuss the importance of providing clean water access to communities that walk a minimum of 6 hours daily for water. The show demonstrates how no matter the age, anyone can make a global impact and by doing so foster international connection.

Emergency Preparedness

When power fails or cell service drops, KXFM stays live. As Laguna Beach’s independent emergency broadcast link, we provide real-time updates, community alerts, and lifesaving information.

In 2026, we will:

  • Install solar + generator backup power
  • Expand crisis communication volunteer training
  • Add mobile field reporting equipment

Hyperlocal On Air Programming

With more than 85 volunteer DJs and hosts, KXFM’s programming reflects the true diversity and creativity of South Orange County. From daily public affairs to deep dives into local arts, every show is powered by neighbors contributing to the cultural fabric of the region.

Community Events

KXFM brings people together off the air through signature events such as:

  • KX Block Party — Free downtown concert
  • KX Takeover — Our on-air fundraiser where residents become DJs
  • Laguna Achievement Festival — Honoring local changemakers
  • Mother’s Day Awards – Nominated the best mothers of the year

Moving the Station

A New Home for Community Media

KXFM is relocating to a new, central, ground-floor studio designed to be visible, accessible, and built for the future of local broadcasting.

Why This Matters

Our new home will become a true community hub — a place where residents can walk in, learn, participate, and connect. The upgraded space also strengthens our emergency broadcast capabilities and expands our capacity to train youth and volunteer hosts.

Features of the New Studio

  • Ground-floor visibility
  • Outdoor community lounge
  • Performance and event area
  • Dedicated podcast studio
  • ADA-compliant access
  • Enhanced solar + generator backup systems

Budget & Goal

  • Project Budget: $150,000
  • Fundraising Goal: $150,000

This move is our most ambitious project yet — and essential to the future of independent media in Laguna Beach.
